We introduce the rejection game, designed to formalize interaction between interlocutors in a Stalnakerian conversation: speaker who asserts something and listener may accept or reject. The game is similar other signalling games known literature economics biology. point out similarities differences, propose an application linguistics. uncover basic conditions under which Gricean maxim of quality emerges from incentives among players, providing evidence for functionalist understanding program.
